Title: Noob trying to find host for his bot
Post by: Monrath on May 23, 2010, 02:30:27 pm
I've got the bot running on my computer, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution, and I'm looking for a server to host my guild bot. I've been reading old threads on the forum and understand that I need a shell server with php and mysql.

Is there anyone around that have experience in using shell accounts, and can you please post a link to any european provider of such service that support running Bebot?

Thx in advance :)

I personally use gandi (http://www.gandi.net/hosting/) for this, they're located in France and I've been pretty happy with them. A quick search on google should show other companies doing vps.

WeZoN also offers a hosting service http://bebot.link/general-discussion/bot-hosting/ but the downside of that is that he will probably need access to your AoC account details which for me is an absolute no. (nothing personal WeZoN)

Thanks a lot:)

I bought a share there, I have NO IDEA how to proceed with installing the bot atm though.. When creating a server; could I go for the Use Gandi AI (easy mode)? Any tips on how to get me started?

(yes I know, noobs shouldn't be dealing with Bots:)

It's been a while, I didn't use the AI but installed the modules manually, you could use the AI though to configure and install PHP and mysql, then untar the bot files.

http://wiki.gandi.net/en/hosting/gandi-ai/module

If you mess up a reformat is quickly done :p

Also have a look here: http://bebot.link/helpful-posts/bebot-on-linux/msg577/#msg577

With Gandi AI all modules will be installed but the post above will help you configure it, also I run my bots in different 'screen' sessions (also explained in the post above)

Feel free to ask and I will see what I can do to help :D

Thx again! I used the Gandi Ai to set up the server

Am I supposed to use the ProFTPd to get access to the server/transfer Bebot files?

Looks like the Noob have finally gotten his Bot up and running. Big thx to Yite for your support:) One question remain though:

I'm trying to install the screen feature, but neither "sudo apt-get install screen" or "apt-get install screen" works. When I use the "sudo" command I get prompted to  type in my admin password, then redirected to admin@myservername:~$. If I try typing screen I get the message: -bash: screen: command not found..  I tried going to the root directory and typing "apt-get install screen", then I get the follow message:

E: Unable to open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

It could be that another package manager is already running (maybe Gandi AI is locking it), have you tried installing screen from there?

I disabled Gandi Ai for access to root, and this process is not reversible. So don't think I can install screen from Gandi Ai interface.

Try this article: http://wiki.gandi.net/en/hosting/troubleshooting/using-apt-get

No offense taken..

Yes, i will still have access to the area that the bot files is located, but i'm very proffessional. I do not touch the users files. The only time i would step in is if the space would suddenly have 2gb of files in it.

I could try to use some kind of other system to rent out to people that would give them more security (would be a good challenge for me^^ )

No promises for that atm tho as i have my it-exams coming up ^^
