Title: i18n and l10n
Post by: Blueeagle on April 11, 2007, 12:48:49 am
Have anyone given thought to implementing internationalization and localization?

I'm reading a bit on the GNU gettext libraries and was wondering if anyone else had thoughts on this. I know many guilds have nationality as a requirement and offering them a bot that speaks their own touge wouldn't be a bad idea

Still not sure how much work it would take to implement i18n and l10n support. Does anyone else have experience in such? Or other thoughts?

Edit:

Been reading up on it and it seems that it would greatly encourage a move to using printf() and sprintf() in all modules. Although echo will work using (s)printf would make translations easier. That's atleast what I make of it...

My main concern would be, how much will it cost us in times of slowing the bot down and CPU usage.

AO is english (except rk3, let them do whatever they want) so there's no real need to add a bunch of localization and other useless crap. Yes it is useless because anyone that has a need for a bot has to know more than enough english to play the game.
It's a lot better to spend time and effort into something that'll benefit the entire community instead of a limited playerbase. I know of at least one "country" org that doesn't only have people from that country in it. They wouldn't understand a thing if the bot suddenly started using native language.
